39 Qvevri

The main value of the winery "39 Qvevri" is the traditional Georgian wine, made from local grape varieties and aged in the old way in kevri.

The company's goal was to produce just such a wine, so they decided to build a winery in the village of Bitzmendi, one of the most significant historical places in Kartli, the center of viticulture and winemaking. Vineyards were planted on this territory, where four Georgian varieties of grapes (Shavkapito, Horuli Mtsvane, Kisi and Khikhvi) are grown.

Bitsmendi has a special historical significance and is associated with the names of such famous traditional Georgian winemakers as Guramishvili, with his famous vineyards and cellars, or Illi Tsinamdzgvrishvili, one of the most prominent figures of the 19th century, the founder and teacher of Tsinamdzgvriantkarsky agricultural.
The values and attitudes of 39 Qvevri are based on this tradition.

History:

The Kartli region, including the villages of Bitsmendi, Saguramo (Guramiantkari), Dzhigaura and other villages, was historically famous for the vineyards and cellars of the Guramishvili princes. Davyd Guramishvili repeatedly mentions local grapes and wine in his works. Historical sources also contain information about the famous wines of this region. In the 19th century, thanks to the efforts of Ilya Tsinamdzgvrishvili, this area, along with the agricultural one, acquired the status of an educational center. First, Ilya Tsinamdzgvrishvili opened a school, and then published a book on growing grapes. It is in this book that we find information that Guramishvili had a vineyard of more than 100 hectares, and in the middle of the vineyard there was a large cellar made of hewn stone (which still operates) "with large full kvevri".

Kartli is one of the most unique regions of Georgian winemaking, with special wines, and this uniqueness is due to the local climate, soils and, of course, varieties of varieties: from white varieties Chinuri, Horuli Mtsvane, Bedushuri white, from red varieties - Tavkveri and Shavkapito. Rkatsiteli and Saperavi are also common in Kartli, as well as several foreign varieties, such as Aligote, black and white Pinot, etc. There are such rare varieties as Danaharuli, Buza, Aragvispiruli, Andreuli, Dakidula, Grdzelmtevana, Grubela and others. There are many areas, valleys and villages for wine production in Kartli - Atena, Hidistavi, Okami, Samtavisi, Lamiskan, Muhrani valley; however, the Bitsmendi-Saguramo-Jigaura-Tsynamdzgvriantkari zone has special differences. This side is even called "Little Kakheti".

Placing:
The village of Bitsmendi is located in the eastern part of Georgia, in the northeastern part of the Mukhran-Saguramo plain, which belongs to the Mtskheta municipality of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region. It is surrounded by the Akhtana and Rusishkhevi gorges, and borders large forest areas from the north. The village is located at an altitude of 620-650 m above sea level, at a distance of 20 km from the city of Mtskheta.

Soil and Climate:
On the plain of Saguramo, there are mainly meadow browns and alluvial carbonate soils, which are characterized by a granular structure. There are various stone-pebble sandy areas. The soil has good physical properties and retains a sufficient amount of moisture, rich in minerals and trace elements. The depth of the fertile horizon in places is 60-80 cm. As the depth increases, the soil acquires a higher overall carbonate content and alkaline reaction.
The 39 Qvevri vineyards are also a classic example of this zone, especially considering that they are grown in the foothills, near the gorges, where the influence of the forest is well felt. This place is called Little Kakheti, where hot sunny days and cool, windy nights create excellent conditions for ripening grapes. Foothills, a slight slope, forest, good aeration and evening coolness are the keys to the best harvest, since coolness is very important for reaching physiological maturity.

As for the climate, the village of Bitzmendi has a moderately warm climate, with cold winters and hot summers. The average long-term air temperature is 10.8°C, the hottest months are July and August. The average temperature during this period is 22-23°С, the sum of annual active temperatures is 3240-36700С, and the average annual precipitation is 570-620 mm (sometimes it reaches 700 mm, for example - 691 mm in 2018).
It rarely snows. The months with the most precipitation are April (120-140 mm) and May (140-180 mm). The minimum temperature in winter sometimes drops to - 13 - 15 0C, (data for the last 20 years). The coldest months are December and February. The average annual air humidity is no more than 60-62%. The direction of the winds is mainly from the southwest to the northeast.
